Our Story
The Fact Tree was established in 1991, thanks to a strong group of local activists who recognised the need for young people to have their own space where they felt safe, seen and heard. Betty Makin, a local community leader, known for her strength, compassion and commitment to community, was instrumental in establishing The Fact Tree for the local youth. Makin was known for her dedication to social causes and her efforts to improve the lives of others. She was particularly passionate about issues related to education, healthcare, and women’s rights. As a strong advocate for equality, she worked tirelessly to ensure that all members of the community had access to the resources and support they needed to thrive.
The Fact Tree was established and continues to be based in Waterloo, Sydney, which has a rich political history marked by activism, community resilience, and struggles for equality. It is an area with a strong sense of community identity and pride, and The Fact Tree continues to be a vital piece of this community.

Throughout the years, The Fact Tree has stood alongside the community in challenging times (for example the 2004 Redfern Riots and the Waterloo Housing Redevelopment) and have always been there as a consistent source of strength and advocacy. We have seen the community through significant changes and transitions, and continue to advocate for policies and deliver programs that prioritize the needs of those most vulnerable in the community.
